Take aways from the 50 fastest swims for men and women:

  1. Ironman Cozumel was clearly the fastest swim in 2017.  The top 12 male times, and top 7 female times were all at Cozumel.  Ironman Brazil is just behind with 13-21 on the male side, and four times between 8-19 on the female side.
  2. There were 8 different races in the top 50 swims for males, and 17 races in the top 50 swims for female.  This means the fastest males are more likely going to have a pack to swim with than the fastest females.
  3. Four males in the top 50 swims, and six females in the top 50 won the race.
  4. 50 different males are featured in the top 50 swims, while only 36 different females are featured in the top 50.  7 females have multiple results in the top 50.  Celine Schaerer and Kate Comber are each tied with the most results in the top 50 at four.
  5. Jarrod Shoemaker had the fastest swim in 39:17, while Alicia Kaye had the fastest female time in 41:49.  Shoemaker was about 6% faster than Kaye.  Both of these times were at Ironman Cozumel.
  6. Lucy Charles and Lauren Brandon are fast, really fast!  If you watched Kona in 2017 this isn’t a surprise.  Besides Brandon, Haley Chura at the Ironman World Championship is the closest any female came to Charles, at 3:15 back, and Brandon had the fastest overall split at both Ironman Texas and Ironman Mont Tremblant.
  7. Alicia Kaye had the fastest female swim in 2017 (41:49), but her Kona swim of 53:04 had her 6th out of the water, 4:16 back of Lucy Charles, and was the 48th fastest swim of the year.  Josh Amberger had the fastest swim in Kona in 2017, and Amberger beat Sebastian Kienle out of the water in Hawaii by 6:35, but Amberger only had the 48th fastest swim of 2017 (47:09 at Ironman World Championship) while Kienle had the 7th fastest swim (41:36 at Ironman Cozumel).  This goes to show that the course has a very significant impact on swim times.
  8. Andy Potts, who has traditionally been the the standard in mens triathlon, did not feature in the top 50 swim times in 2017.  Potts was 28th out of the water in Kona, towards the tail end of the lead group, and 1:52 behind Josh Amberger at the front of the race.
